Income Tax Rates for Salaried Income for fiscal Year 2018-19 in Pakistan

Published on

As this year the government in Pakistan have been changed and power have been transferred from Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), so two budgets were presented. One from the leaving government and one from new PTI Government. So there was a lot of confusion regarding the income tax rates for upcoming tax payment for fiscal year 2018-19, the tax which will be due for payment just after June 2019.

So to clear this we have done some research and here is what FBR have to say about the tax rates for salaried income for Fiscal Year 2018-19.

# Income Category Yearly Tax Amount
1 Taxable Income below 400,000 0%
2 Taxable Income between 400,000 and 800,000 Rs. 1000
3 Taxable Income between 800,000 and 1,200,000 Rs. 2000
4 Taxable Income between 1,200,000 and 2,400,000 5% of Amount Exceeding Rs. 1,200,000
5 Taxable Income between 2,400,000 and 4,800,000 Rs. 60,000 Plus 10% of Amount Exceeding 2,400,000
6 Taxable Income above 4,800,000 Rs. 300,000 Plus 15% of Amount Exceeding 4,800,000

So, as per the latest income tax rates for fiscal year 2018-19 for salaried income in Pakistan, if you earn anything up to 400,000 Rs. Yearly you are not required to pay any tax. Any one earning between 400,000 to 1,200,000 will have to pay minor 1000 or 2000 Rs. yearly. And the real tax slabs start after 1,200,000. So for anyone earning up to 100,000 monthly there is virtually no tax, which makes perfect sense, as government tried to put tax burden on people earning better and gave relief to people earning up to 100,000 monthly.

PTI Takes its Decision Back to Appoint Nasir Khosa as a Caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab

Published on

Pakistan Threek-e-Insaf has taken the U-turn and changed its decision of appointing or nominating Mr. Nasir Saeed Khosa as a former Chief Minister of Pakistan. This decision has been made with the mutual collaboration of both parties Pakistan Muslim League-N and PTI.

Nasir Khosa

The consultation has been done between Mian Shahbaz Shareef and Main Mahmood ur Rasheed to nominate Khosa as former Chief Minister. Both of them discussed briefly on this matter for a long time and agreed on it. Mian Mahmood ur Rasheed said, “Proper consultations were not held and the decision was taken in haste.”

Shahbaz Shareef tweeted on Monday, “Glad to announce that Leader of the opposition Punjab and I have agreed on the name of Nasir Saeed Khosa as caretaker Chief Minister Punjab for interim setup. Another step towards strengthening the democratic process.” However, on Thursday PTI changed its decision in its core group meeting with Imran Khan and released the statement to remove Khosa’s nomination and consider someone else.

On the other side, Punjab Government declined this decision and considering it unconstitutional. According to them, this decision has been made with the consultation of both parties, so now withdrawing the name would be against the law.

Furthermore, the Law Minister Rana Snaullah commented on this situation, “Khosa’s name was finalized through consultation. There is no way to retract the whole consultation process by withdrawing an agreed nomination. Holding fresh consultation is not possible as per the Constitution.”

Pakistan Threek-e-Insaf gives the reason of taking a U-turn on this decision that Mr. Khosa has the close relations and concerns with PML-N party and also with Sharif family. So, appointing him as a caretaker Chief Minister would not be the best option in favor of PTI. According to them, the interim Chief Minister should be neutral. While talking to press Mahmood ur Rasheed said, Not only the party activists but some senior PTI leaders and intelligentsia also objected to Nasir Khosa’s name that led the party to revisit its decision.” Against the PTI decision Information Minister Mariyum Aurangzeb said, “Running the country’s affairs is not a child’s play and Khan has proved he is not capable of that.”

PTI senior member said, “We respect Nasir Khosa for his credibility but he has become controversial as his closeness to Sharifs has become public and we don’t want anyone controversial as that will impact fair and free elections.”

PTI seems too much concerned about the selection of caretaker government and this is its second U-turn on the selection issue.

Has Imran Khan Lost his Way?

Published on

Imran KhanNo, it does not start from Imran Khan, it starts from the Barack Obama, who is the current president of United States of America (USA). Once, very long time ago, I was listening to speech of Barack Obama, what I liked about his speech was, he not just made the promises, but made promises with supporting stats. About everything he was talking, he was giving the current stats for it, he had proper research done on issues and than was telling, in next year or so, I will improve this thing to this level, that too with stats. You know what I am talking about, the promises with proper stats and complete assessment of current situation of an issue.

Now, things are very different here in Pakistan. Politicians just make the promises, never give those supporting stats, neither they have idea of current situation. But that speech of Obama grabbed my attention to this matter at that time more than ever, I wished for our politicians to adopt that approach.

Back in those days, Imran Khan was not that popular as politician. So, one day I happened to listen his speech to a rally or may be it was a TV talk show, I do not remember much, but the point is, I noticed that day Imran Khan was also talking with supporting facts and figures. It was his first ever talk I was listening to, he was making the promises but in very sensible manner and was stating some facts about the country and was providing the solutions too.

Later on, as he started to talk about the change and putting the more attentions to People’s rights, I had decided to support him in next elections. So I did supported him in 2013 Pakistan General Elections with my vote.

Now just fast forwarding to now, his party is in power in KPK for about 3 years. They did achieved much, they have put attention to the health, they have put attention to depoliticizing the police and we have seen few small infrastructure projects. Also, they have come up with project that will result in Global cleaner environment, plantation of billion trees.

However, there is something missing. And the missing thing same key ingredient with which I have started this article in the first place. The ingredient of those stats which I once used to see in the speeches of Imran Khan. Nor Imran Khan neither the KPK (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak have lately been seen with those stats about things. I mean, telling the people anout situation of everything with current stats and than levels to which you will improve it in next year. This tells me that Imran Khan have lost his way, he is now more of a political player, who wants to bring the change but does not have all those supporting stats.

Its not just stats, KPK government promised to make a metro project in Peshawar and much much later they are seen asking the land from Pakistan Railways, not sure how they think they have right on that land. So criticizing the feds is one thing, but you got to prove you are better.

So I am rightfully forced to think that Imran Khan have lost his way, but seeing his track record, I have not lost all the hopes. I hope to see him do much more in coming years in KPK, I hope to see him talk with stats next time when he do talk in any public meeting. Finally, he needs to get his old way back to get my vote once again. That is talk with stats, set clear goals for next year, than talk with same stats on end of year and tell people how much have been achieved.

Its the last chance for KPK government to adopt these methods, as just 2 years are remaining. So, start now and you will have something to compare with on end of year. So must adopt this for last two years.

With all that said, currently no politician in the country make promises with people of Pakistan with supporting stats, they say “load shedding will be ended soon”, not with the exact solid exact current stats, not a solid deadline and finally no details of how they intend to do that. So I will bound to call such stat less promises the “lame” ones.

Pakistani Nation now deserves that politician does not make the lame promises with them. They deserve to know when their problems will be solved and how they will be solved. So that “HOW” can only be addressed with those supporting stats. So the Feds as well as all provinces need to adopt this approach. May Allah Bless Pakistan.
