Flawful energy conservation plan leads to confusion and differences among Pakistanis

Regarding the energy conservation to cope with current energy crisis of country government came up with idea of having weekly holiday on Saturday as well along with Sunday and also they decided to close all markets and commercial centers after Maghreb prayer or Sunset in other words.

Now all organizations and banks etc are banned from opening on Saturday. Which in some areas is harming people as well. But irony started when the differences between provinces came in. Every province government have started taking the issue their own ways. Punjab and Khyber pukhtoon-kh0wah have decided to remain open on the Saturday on other side Sindh decided to have a holiday and Bilochistan remained in situation of uncertainty about the holiday.

Now to start with I am not in opposition on Saturday’s holiday, as everyone needs two days rest in week to start with the next week’s work. But the ‘government planning only additional holiday and early business closures’ was the worst thing to do in order to conserve the energy or to deal with energy crisis. Plus if they had given holiday then things must have been same in all over the country not different in different areas of Pakistan. Its the biggest failure that different areas in same country are having days off differently. In one area two holidays and in other one holiday in a week.

This whole idea of days off and daily early business closures to conserve energy is full of flaws. If you have to deal with energy crisis and do something for people of Pakistan, then plan the new power production houses and make them happen. Keeping in mind the natural resources which God have blessed this country with, which can be used in order to deal with energy crisis, the current closure initiative from Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) government is nothing but a fluke.

There are some businesses and specially shopping centers/malls which do most of their business after the Sunset. As people get free from their day job, they are free only after sunset, so they can go out with family, go to shopping etc but government somehow made sure that this don’t happen as well as businesses don’t grow in these bad times.

In 21st century when world is going towards and successfully implementing the 24/7 business, Pakistan is moving towards further closures. In this country businesses hardly have 8 to 10 hours and even some times much less than them, the PPP government have now made sure to steal back few more hours from businesses.

PPP government must understand that 21st century is not in any case the century of energy conservation but it is the century of providing the enough energy which keeps the wheels spinning. Its not century of closures but the century of setting up the new power production houses. Country like Pakistan which have huge coal reserves, conditions favoring the production of energy through water, wind or even solar energy, one of world’s largest gold reserves and much more. How on earth this country could be struggling to fulfill its energy needs.

The credit of whole energy chaos and differences goes to the current PPP government, their incompetent people don’t know how to deal with the energy crisis and shutting down the country instead of giving new power production houses. Plus the current power production capability of Pakistan is much more than current requirement but due to corrupt elements in country administration and incompetent people in power the required amount of electricity is not being produced.

I am not sure how everyone in power all over Pakistan plan to keep the people of Pakistan on their side in next elections, as things have gone from bad to worse in last few years and no serious efforts are done to cope with the countless and still increasing problems of People of Pakistan. May God Bless this Country.

Electricity load shedding situation brought under control says Minister for Water and Power

The Pakistani minister for water and power Naveed Qamar told the media last night that they have to some extent controlled the load shedding situation and the production is brought to 12400 Megawatts (MW) from the 9000 MW which was being produced before. By the way, does someone did not told minister that the production was down to just 7500 MW, same thing had caused the worst short fall of history.

Minister Naveed Qamar also claimed that the production will be back to 14000 MW within next 48 hours. I personally doubt that, as about same is the requirement of country’s power requirement, considering the load shedding which had been there from long time without any pauses, you can tell that the full of required power’s amount had not been produced from long time. So how suddenly the minister can claim that they will suddenly be producing the full amount of required electricity.

If they do succeed in that, then why after people woke up and came up with protests. Why it did not happened. By the way the production capability of much more than 14000 MW is already there in Pakistan, according to government’s own released documents Pakistan have capability of producing 19500 MW. Then why just the one third of required electricity amount was being generated.

As government came up with excuses like supply of Oil to power plants and circular dept. If we see closely the issues are just the same but thing to understand here is that these problems are produced by government itself or just by their mismanagement. The oil provider PSO is government entity, as well as the biggest defaulters of PEPCO are also government entities like province governments themselves, which contribute to circular dept. So if government would have been serious or competent enough, they must have took steps to improve the communication between its departments like PSO and PEPCO  as well as its water management authorities. Secondly, they would have taken the steps to perform the recoveries from the big fishes like departments of government itself to improve the circular dept situation.

If communication between these departments would have been better than, PSO never would have stopped the oil supply triggering the worst load shedding of history, also water authorities would have released the enough water when it was required by the PEPCO’s production entities. By the way if government would have coped with the circular dept situation on time then none of those problems would have been there.

Lets see if government still gets able to produce the required 14000 MW for now but to me this claim by Naveed Qamar the minister seems like just the empty claim, like the ones which have been coming from same government in 2009, then 2010.

Bottom line, without addition of new power production plants, still Pakistan have capability to produce much more electrical power than required one, if some problems are there, they are just on managerial level and are only due to the incompetence of authorities. Pakistani people deserve to be given the uninterrupted electrical power, which this government is not being able to provide but they better do something about it soon.

Worst power load shedding of history brings people to the roads

Recently the worst power shortage and load shedding in response hit the country. The power requirement of country in these days is about 16500 Mega Watts (MW) but the production is down to all time low in recent times which is just 7500 MW. In response the electricity load shedding of hours is being observed all over the country.

Most effected in recent times are the business people and industries, which are all shut down due to power outages. Common people who rely on power for their living are most affected and furious, hence loads of people have hit the roads once again to remind the current government of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) about their unfulfilled promises of putting an end to electricity load shedding.

The situation is more worse than before, in past this country had been producing more than 14000 MW of power but now this capability is down to just 7500 MW. Recently, four of power plants which run on oil were reportedly idle due to stoppage of fuel provision.

This power situation is effacting the whole country and people all over Pakistan which include cities like Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Karachi and many more have hit the roads on past day. Instead of understanding the misery they are going through, protesters were met with power and police force was used against protesters. Many protesters were beat down by the police using sticks specially in Lahore.

The point is weather still Pakistan will be given with the solution to their power needs or people will still have to live in darkness in this country in 21st century. Pakistan have got loads of natural resources, Cole is just one example, plus this country is Nuclear Power. Production of required power and much more must not be an issue of this country but the issue have to be seriously picked up by a worthy and caring administration. Current PPP administration seems to be failed till now in that. They still have half the time left to make things happen and give the people of Pakistan what they deserve.

Zardari to initiate several short term power generation projects in Sindh

Apparently very much into the third year of Pakistan Peoples Party in government, Mr. Zardari finally thought something about treating the power shortage situation in the country. So he have recently advised the authorities of Sindh to start getting bids for several energy projects in Sindh, which will serve the province’s power needs. These projects will start as part of Sindh’s electricity generation policy and will be completed with in 12 to 18 months.

Now question is electricity problems were there since beginning, why Mr. Zardari didn’t thought of doing something as soon as he came in power. Doesn’t it look like some kind of popularity stunt before the next elections?, which are not more far away now then just two years. Apparently the whole situation makes it look like a desperate popularity stunt of Pakistan Peoples Party before next elections. Consider this, Power generations projects are being started in Sindh and Sindh is province which is vote bank of Pakistan Peoples Party. Moreover, power projects will be complete in just 12 to 18 months, apparently it would be before elections so party can base elections campaign on base of them.

Leave aside the motives, whether they are positive or not, but one thing I am happy with is finally some projects being thought of which will in fact benefit the country and its people. Which is good thing in all its means. If Pakistan Peoples party wants to make it big, they will have to think some real big projects as well and may be also take some solid measure to eradicate the corruption from the country, which unfortunately seem to be each level, then they may have very good chance to come back in government in next elections.

Electicity load shedding in Pakistan intensifies in summer 2011

Summer 2011 is just starting and electricity load shedding in Pakistan already started to intensify. Power load shedding of 12 hours is already in place in many areas of country, PEPCO claimed that electricity short fall is 2500 Mega Watts (MW) already. We are just into April, May at the moment as we head towards the more hotter months of summer like June, July and August the electricity shortfall is going to reach 6000 MW or even above. Real long hours of load shedding is expected in coming months.

Already we are experiencing the worst load shedding of history of Pakistan, now question comes in mind “who is responsible for all of this?”. Before we conclude lets have a look on some facts related to the issue.

Its a known fact that along with house hold consumers the Industry of Pakistan is effected badly due to load shedding. Putting the production of very much critical goods in jeopardy. But the DG PEPCO (Pakistan Electric Power Company) while talking to a private TV channel evening talk show on 25th of April denied the fact that Load Shedding ever effected any Industry of Pakistan. Also he confirmed that load shedding will increase in coming days if supply of oil and gas is not restored to full required level.

DG PEPCO also said we need to put more load on consumer, only that way we can get around the issue of load shedding. According to him they are giving Rs. 2 plus subsidy to people and need to finish it and bring price to more than 9 Rs per unit from current 7.05 for house hold consumers. Also DG PEPCO blamed on the line losses and few defaulters the cause of load shedding. While it was discussed that President house is one of the defaulters of PEPCO, he tried to defend the ruling party (Pakistan Peoples Party).

If we look into this once again, not just a feeling but putting forward the fact like “who have to make sure oil is supplied to the PEPCO” also “who have to make sure the support of gas to PEPCO” and also “who have to facilitate the PEPCO to look forward into alternate/clean energy sources like Thermal/Solar energy”, the only entity responsible for all of this is Government of Pakistan.

The party in power which calls it self the “Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) ” seems to do nothing. Either its provision of Oil and gas to the PEPCO or the future planning and thinking about opting the alternate energy sources like Thermal and Solar energy, this party is doing nothing but is just silent spectator of bad situation of People of Pakistan. BTW PPP seems to do nothing on any of project which interests people of Pakistan.

According the to PEPCO they can’t give any time line when they will be able to cope with the issue of electricity, in fact they are not sure even it will ever happen. Rightly so, when the party in power is not concerned about condition of people and doing nothing on its end, then Newton’s first law comes in, telling us, some one have got to do this, this will never happen itself.

Chances of current party in Power (PPP) being elected in next elections are slim looking at the situation Pakistan have been in their power period, and they better be, as we need people in power who really work for the country and not just come up with lame promises.

If you are any official of PPP reading this post time, you are still holding all the cards, you would want to be elected in next election (won’t you?), well if yes, you better do it and better do it fast, for your own self, for your own coming generations and for your country.

Long live Pakistan and may Allah solve the problems of this great nation called “Pakistanis”.
